We, my wife and two children and I, lived at first in a school bus that I had bought from the Church of Christ. When winter hit and our feet were freezing it seemed to the floor of the bus we decided to move into our house which only had tarps over the two door openings because I hadn't the money to buy the doors as yet.
The snow was on the ground and the first night in our new house we were late getting in because of our jobs (wife and I both worked). It was a little after midnight I think.
I had left our dog and her new pups in the middle of the dirt floor of the house and near the wood stove in the corner we had put our bed next to the north and east walls.
As we arrived home and my wife went to lay the baby (my son) on the bed she felt something sticky on the back of her hand and I had set my daughter down and was fumbling with the coal oil lamp which was our only light. When I had gotten it lit with my cold hands, my wife and I gasped at what we saw!
There in the middle of the warm bed was my dog and a couple of her pups munching on a dead possum she had just killed and there was blood all over the bed. What a first night in our new home~!!
However, it did turn out to be one of the best homes I have ever lived in and gave us a supreme enjoyment that none of us will ever want to forget.
